Abstract
Task-based language teaching, a learner-centered method, advocates the shift from teacher dependence to learner independence in learning EFL. This study was aimed at examining the implementation of task based writing in the Bekoji Secondary School. To be specific, it focuses on the types of writing tasks, roles of teachers in the implementation of this tasks and factors influencing the task implementation. The population consisted of 360 students and out of these the researcher limited the sample size to 156 randomly selected grade 9 students and 6 purposely chosen Grade 9 English teachers. All the selected subjects completed the questionnaire and thus participated in the study. The data of this research was collected through four techniques of data collection: Questionnaire, Interview, Classroom observation and document analysis. To analyze the data, the researcher used two types of data analysis in the research. Accordingly, the numerical data gathered through the questionnaire and interviews were analyzed quantitatively presented in tabular form and percentile scales. Percentage scales were used to compare the frequency of the responses the subjects. The qualitative data gathered by interview and observation were qualitatively analyzed. The result shows that task based writing is not implemented in accordance with the principles of TBLT although few English teachers were implementing it to some extent. Beside this, various factors affecting the implementation of TBW among which students’ poor writing background and large class size were among the most serious factors to be given due attention. To this end, the recommendation included arranging well organized training and discussion programs so as to increase learners and teachers awareness about the use and implementation of TBW at junior and secondary school levels, Inviting interested scholars to explore the implementation of TBW at Junior school and to conduct experimental research on the effect of TBW in the learner writing performance at any grade level.
