Interaction of metal ions with N, O and S atoms of Schiff bases have gained much attention in recent years due to their various biological activity such as ant malarial, anticancer, antibacterial, antifungal and ant tubercular. In this project, two new Cu (II) and Co (II) metal complexes of Aniline and Vanillin Schiff base were synthesized and screened for their antibacterial activity. The structures and geometry of Schiff base and two complexes were confirmed by elemental analysis (H, C and N), 1H-NMR, 13C-NMR, FT-IR, AAS and Magnetic susceptibility measurements. The Schiff base behaving as tridentate O,N,O donor employing one azomethine nitrogen, one hydroxyl oxygen and one methoxy oxygen atom. The electronic spectra of Co (II) complex exhibited band at 438nm, which were assigned to the d-d transition type 4T1g 4T1g (F) for a high spin octahedral geometry whereas the electronic spectra of Cu (II) complex exhibited band at 404nm due to LMCT and spectra at 533nm due to d-d transition type 3A2g 3T2g for a low spin suggest a distorted octahedral geometry. The synthesized Schiff base and Cu (II) and Co (II) complexes were screened for their antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli, S.aureus, K.pneumonia and Protein mirabilis. Overall, the antibacterial tests revealed that the Schiff base showed a very promising activity (17mm) against K.pneumonia compared to that of gentamicin (15mm) and Cu (II) complex also showed promising activity (13mm) against E. coli compared to that of gentamicin (14mm).en_US
