Abstract

In this research study synthesize, characterization of zinc oxide (ZnO) nanoparticles and is applications on cotton textiles for UV protection and antibacterial activities were investigated. The nanoparticles were synthesized at different temperature (90° or 150°C) and reaction medium (water or 1,2-ethanediol) using precipitation method. Scanning electron microscopy, X-ray powder diffractometry and UV-vis were used to characterize shape, size and optical properties of the NPs. The average crystallite size of the ZnO NPs estimated from XRD spectra using Debye Scherrer formula was found to be 19.19 and 19.21 nm respectively. The morphology of ZnO NPs characterized by SEM shows flower and spherical shape on treated cotton textiles. UV protection ability of ZnO NPs coated and uncoated for local and factory prepared cotton textiles were investigated using UV-vis spectroscopy by measuring the ultraviolet protection factor (UPF) values in the range 280-400 nm. Higher Values of UPF were obtained when ZnO NPs prepared using in situ method. The Antibacterial activities of ZnO-coated on fabric possess good bacteriostatic activity against S. aureus and E. coli bacteria using agar disc diffusion method.
