Abstract

The purpose of this study was to identify the major oral communication barriers that hinder students’ English speaking skill in Chefe Secondary School. To this end, a descriptive method was employed by using both quantitative and qualitative approach. The sample population of the study includes 188 students were selected using random sampling techniques (quota system). Ten English teachers of the target school were selected purposively. The data were gathered through questionnaires, interviews and classroom observation and analyzed through quantitative and qualitative The finding of the study revealed that English language classroom oral communication interaction was not properly implemented. Most of time the classrooms were dominated by classroom teacher, students’ were listening to their classroom teachers’ talk than participating in the given activities. Finally, depending up on the finding, it was summarized and recommended that in order to minimize oral communication barriers. Teachers should motivate the students and give emphasis for oral communication practice in English in the class. In addition, to promote the students’ learning of oral communication in English speaking skill, both English teachers and students have play their appropriate role for students learning oral communication. Besides, the concerned the entire stake holder needs to deal with barriers of large class size related factors to alleviate the problem.
