| dc.description.abstract | A tyre is an important part of a road vehicle which transfers static and dynamic forces of a vehicle to the road. The load on the tyre is supported by forcefully filed compressed air and its body structure. The aim of this study was to investigate the impact of tyre inflation pressure on vehicle operations at the Wonji Shoa sugar factory. Different works of literature are reviewed to disclose the contribution of other scholars concerning the impact of tyre inflation pressure on vehicle operation. Mat lab Simulink software, Quasi-Static Simulation Toolbox (QSS TB), vehicles with 205/70R16 tyres and Microsoft Excel are the materials used in this study work. Data from Wonji Shoa sugar factory vehicles are collected by direct interview. Mathematical models and simulations are developed in Mat lab Simulink and QSS TB to capture the influence of tyre inflation pressure on vehicle operation from the viewpoint of fuel consumption, vehicle handling and ride comfort. The bouncing acceleration of the sprung mass is higher at higher tyre inflation pressure and the bouncing displacement of the sprung mass becomes higher at lower tyre inflation pressure results are obtained. It was also revealed that fuel consumption was increased by about 4.9% as tyre inflation pressure reduced from 3 to 2 bars. From the data collected, more than 73% of Wonji Shoa sugar factory vehicles are operating with at least one tyre deflated more than 25%. Therefore Wonji Shoa sugar factory loses about 207,324.5 liters of fuel per year in addition to 4,231,111 liters of planned fuel due to incorrect tyre inflation pressure. To tackle this problem tyre pressure monitoring system was recommended to enable live tyre condition monitoring. | en_US |
