Abstract

The purpose of this study was to assess the female teachers‟ participation in school leadership in Government Secondary school leadership in East Shoa Zone. With this, an attempt was made to forward possible solutions for the problems and then to provide recommendations to identified problems. To conduct this study, descriptive survey method was employed. The participants of this study were 134 teachers selected by using simple random sampling techniques. Out of this, female teachers constitute 45 whereas the remaining 89 are male teachers. The 10 school principals, 6 Woreda Education Officials, and 6 Women and children affairs office holder were also involved in the study By availability Sampling. The data were collected by using questionnaire, interview and document analysis. Both quantitative and qualitative data analysis were employed in order to reach at results. The findings of the study revealed; that there is still low participation of females in secondary school leadership; It also revealed that there is a gap in implementation of policies, rules and regulations in the Zone: females have capability to lead Secondary school; females assume that they will not be successful in leading school; females do not have plan and set their promotion goals to be school leader. Some of the challenges which could hinder women participation in educational leadership were for instance, men dominance of management; Female teachers do not get adequate mentoring service in their staff. Male assume, females have lack of confidence in their capabilities, qualification and experience; Females are reluctant to accept responsibility. Because the female teachers are not encouraged by the school society to represent on key educational leadership position. Females have no interest and motivation to apply for school leadership. Depending on the finding conclusions drawn; The major factors that affect female teacher‟s participation were manifested in organizational, personal individual and socio-structural factors. The recommendations are also forwarded: national constitution of policies of concerning women‟s rights assert, women should be given the opportunity to participate in leader ship should be properly implemented in East Shoa Zone education office. Different organizational officials need to give greater recognition for female teachers and place them in functional areas or job assignment that leads to accomplishment critical school tasks and strengthen them to hold higher level of position and women should be self-confident women's self –motivation
