Abstract

The Purpose of this research is to assess to what extent English language teachers practice vocabulary teaching techniques at Oda Bokota Secondary School. The study specially, tried to investigate to what extent teachers practically use vocabulary teaching techniques in EFL classes and identify the major factors that might hinder the implementation of vocabulary teaching techniques in EFL classes. The study employ mixed type method, which involves both quantitative and qualitative methods. Accordingly Oda Bekota Secondary School was selected through availability sampling. Then five English teachers from grade 10 were selected purposefully for the questionnaire, classroom observation and interview. Additionally data were collected from 50 randomly chosen students using questionnaire. Frequencies and percentage were employed in analyzing the quantitative data and the qualitative data were analyzed qualitatively. Based on the findings the researcher recommended that creating meaningful vocabulary technique opportunities through different vocabulary teaching techniques should be practiced more in the school. Teachers lacked practical skills on the implementation of different types of vocabulary teaching techniques in EFL classes according to the learners need. Generally the practice of vocabulary teaching techniques were not given sufficient attention at Oda Bokota Secondary School. Thus the study indicated that English teachers did not practice different vocabulary teaching techniques in EFL classes. Finally, recommendation were drawn based on the findings. 2
