Abstract

Black cotton soil, formed by the decomposition of lava rocks, is a global problem affecting civil engineers. Its expansive nature negatively affects its bearing capacity and can cause damage to infrastructure, such as roadways, pavement structures, building foundations, reservoir linings, water lines, irrigation systems, and sewer lines. The main focus of this research paper was to investigate the effect of Dukem Town black cotton soil (expansive soil) and reducing their expansiveness property by using fly ash of Reppie municipal waste byproduct. Reppie municipal waste byproduct(municipal waste fly ash) has been disposed in traditiona methods from Addis Ababa city which led to environmental, social, and economic problems. For the purpose of this research, this Fly Ihave been used to reduce the impact of black cotton soils was collected from Reppie-Waste-to-Energy Plant" which is found in Addis Ababa. Therefore, this research was proposed to evaluate the index properties, compaction and Unconfined compressive strength(UCS) of the 0% black cotton soils and their behavior after stabilizing by Fly Ash. The result shows that the natural water content measurements were in the range of 30.76 % to 32.67 %. The gradation result shows that the content of gravel soil ranges from 0 to 0.10%, sandy soils range from 3.50 to 10.30%, silt soil range from 64.24 to 92.327% and clay soil range from 4.07-23.87. The specific gravity of the Dukem town black cotton soil samples was ranges 2.55-2.66. Plasticity index of the soil was ranges 14.14-48.11. Compaction dry density with moisture content ranges BH-1 (1.1895g/cm3, 36%) BH 2(1.4174g/cm3, 30%) BH-3(1.4117g/cm3, 28%). For Add 4% to 20% Fly Ash compaction dry density with moisture content ranges BH-1 (1.333g/cm3, 27% to 1.58g/cm3, 30%) BH 2(1.2887 g/cm3, 28% to 1.58g/cm3, 30%) BH-3(1.2753g/cm3, 27% to 1.58g/cm3, 30%). unconfined strength (0%) BH-1 (154.92Kpa) BH-2(151.48Kpa) BH-3(154.745Kpa) For Add 4% to 20% Fly Ash add unconfined strength BH-1 (156.411Kpa to 211.59Kpa), BH 2(156.411Kpa to 211.23Kpa), BH-3(155.523Kpa to 210.03Kpa) of Dukem Town. Based on this experimental work one can proceed and check that the properties of this black cotton(expansive soils) by further adding the percentage amount of this fly ash of municipal waste by product stabilizer alone and also use additional stabilizers and mix to this municipal waste by product fly ash to stabilize the black cotton soil(expansive soil).
