Impacts Of Industries On The Environmental And Socio-Economic Condition Of The Surrounding Communities A Case Of Gelan Town, Tullu Guracha Industrial Area

Abstract

The main objective of the study was to assess the impacts of industries on the environmental and socio economic condition of the surrounding communities in Gelan Town, Tulu Guracha Industrial area. The primary data was obtained from 92 randomly selected respondents by using questionnaires and interview from municipality official’s while the secondary data obtained from published and unpublished sources. To analysis the collected data both the quantitative and qualitative data analysis method were employed. Based on the result of the study different impacts that the industries have on the environment and the social-economic condition of the surrounding communities has identified. Based on the result of the study water pollution, noise and vibration, air pollution and waste disposal has identified as the main impact that the industries have on the environment. Moreover industries degraded the flora and fauna of the surrounding area and its ecosystem service, the landscape aesthetic values and quality of local environment. The industries have also some social and economic impacts on the communities and the surrounding areas including loss of agricultural lands, reduction of food crop production, unemployment, and health and safety impacts. Moreover, pressure on social and health infrastructure, crime, conflicts, and housing problems are the major among the impact that the industries have on socio economic condition of the area. Based on the result of the study to overcome the impacts that the industries have both on the environmental and socioeconomic condition of the study. the study recommended that different measures should be taken by town administration to reduce the ill impact of industrial area such as, awareness creation, and educating and giving train for investors how to reduce environmental and socioeconomic problems Finally, all stake holders at various levels to be equipped with full information about these problem mention here above and had to give especial attention and the industries critically establish unique means and strategies to follow-up and ascertain:
