Abstract

This Research Paper Investigates The Effect Of Gas Porosity On Selected Mechanical Properties And Machinability Characteristics Of Aluminium Alloy Aa6082. The Material Has Been Casted As Per Predetermined Specification Of Casting Process And The Products Or Samples Allowed To Pass Through Different Machining Process And Destructive Testing Methods To Check The Machinability And Mechanical Properties Of The Prepared Samples. The Thesis Tries To Address Sand Casting Gas Porosity As One Of The Most Influential Factors Which Affects The Mechanical Properties And Machinability Characteristics Of Cast Aluminium (Aa6082). Focus Has Been Given Specially On Gas Porosity (Pin Hole And Blow Holes) Due To Hydrogen And Nitrogen Gases On The Mould. Brief Description Has Been Made On Sand Casting Processes, As One Of The Most Important Manufacturing Process And Defects On It. In Addition To That The Factors Affecting Machinability Characteristics And Mechanical Properties Of Cast Aluminium Were Also Studied As A Review Of Literature. In This Thesis Different Cast Aluminium Samples Were Considered: Defect Free Samples And Samples With Defects Of Different Level, Which Intentionally Made For Investigation Purposes. The Material Composition Of Each Samples Were Taken As Constant (Aa6082) And, Nature And Degree Of Defects Will Be Vary By Varying The Moisture Content And Venting Mechanisms Of The Mould. The Surface Finishes Of The Machined Samples, Chips Produced, And Material Removal Rate (Mrr) For Different Level Defect Cast Aluminium Sample Has Been Studied To Check Machinability Characteristics. Mechanical Properties Like Hardness, Impact, Tensile Strength, And Torsional Tests Were Conducted On The Samples To Understand The Difference On Mechanical Properties Of Each Sample Specimen. The Experiments And Tests Were Conducted On Turning Cylindrical Samples And Different Destructive Testing Machines. Various Types Of Equipment And Instruments Were Used For Checking The Samples And Conducting The Experiments As Well. Lastly The Result Of The Experiment Shows, Sand Casting Gas Porosity Have A Negative Effect On Machinability And Mechanical Properties Of Cast Aluminium Alloy Aa6082.
