Abstract
Cities all across the world, including Adama city, are witnessing an increase in the phenomena
of informal settlements. The study aims to investigate and analyze the challenges and
consequences of informal settlements on the environment and livelihood of the community in
Adama Town, Boku Shanan Sub-City. To achieve the objective, the study used a mixed-research
approaches that combines quantitative and qualitative research methods. Data are acquired by
using a questionnaire, interview, remote sensing technique, field observations, amenities and
services, document analysis and focus group discussions. The research design was used a
combination of descriptive and exploratory research design; asimple random sampling
technique was used. The data analysis methods were used descriptive analysis techniques and
exploratory analysis techniques using mean scores and standard deviation and relative
important index method. The study findings addresses contributing to the growth of informal
settlements underlying factors is crucial for developing effective and sustainable strategies to
manage and integrate informal settlements into the urban fabric of Adama. This requires a
multifaceted approach involving land tenure reforms, affordable housing initiatives, improved
urban planning, inclusive governance, and fair compensation practices for peri-urban farmers.
The socio-economic and environmental consequences of informal settlements in Adama's Boku
Shenen sub-city have far-reaching impacts on the city, its residents, existing urban
infrastructure, and services. Addressing these issues requires comprehensive strategies that
prioritize access to basic services, improved infrastructure, and sustainable urban planning to
enhance the overall quality of life for all residents. By addressing the key challenges,
policymakers can work towards enhancing the resilience and sustainability of urban
infrastructure and services in Adama's informal settlements. By addressing the underlying
challenges faced by residents in these settlements and promoting inclusive urban development
practices, local authorities can work towards building a more sustainable and equitable city for
all.
