Abstract
Urban Expansion Is A Complex Phenomenon With Profound Implications For Land Use, Environmental Sustainability, And Socio-Economic Development. This Thesis Investigates The Spatial Patterns Of Urban Expansion In Dukem Sub-City Of Bishoftu, Ethiopia. The Study Also Assesses Driving Reasons For The Spreading Out Of Dukem Sub-City. Dukem Sub-City Is Expanding Rapidly And This Has Brought Land Use Land Cover Conversion Into Urban Use For Different Purposes Particularly To Residential And Industrial Uses. Employing Geographic Information Systems (Gis) And Remote Sensing Techniques, Spatial Data Were Analyzed To Delineate The Extent And Distribution Of Urban Expansion Over A Specific Time Interval From1996-2024. The Primary Data Sources Were Gathered By Means Of Questionnaires And Observations In Order To Identify The Perception Of Office Employees And Community Of The Town On The Factors That Contribute A Lot For The Rapid Expansion Of Dukem. Second hand Data Sources Were Gathered From Reports, Legal Documents, Previous Study Documents, And Socio-Economic Data. The Socio-Economic And Environmental Factors Contributing To Expansion Were Identified Through Statistical Analysis. The Finding Of The Research Reveals That Built-Up Areas Were Increased Dramatically From 260.154 Hectare In 1996 To 1576.17 Hectare In 2024.While Bare Land Coverage Extremely Decreased In All Years From 4980.42 Hectare In 1996 To3064.32 Hectare In 2024. Generally, The Study Investigated That Establishment Of Industries And Manufacturing, Location Of The Town, Increase In Population Size, Existence Of Huge Industries, And Development Of Transportation Infrastructure In The Town Found As Significant Driving Factors That Contribute A Lot For The Dramatic Expansion Urban Expansion Of Dukem Sub-City. As Recommendation, Promoting Mixed-Use Development, Encouraging Infill Development In Existing Urban Areas And Establishing Robust Monitoring Systems Utilizing Data-Driven Approaches Are Suggested To Overcome The Problems Related With Urban Expansion.
