Abstract
Seed processing is a vital part of the total technology involved in making available high quality seed. For any processing it needs seed cleaning machine which has high accuracy, optimal efficiency in a vast range of work with a low noise level. Oromia Seed Enterprise has seed cleaning machines which need performance evaluation and tests. The evaluations and tests are necessary to maximize the efficiency of the seed enterprise and be able to use its machines to their maximum capacity for profitability. Thus, this thesis has been done to conduct performance evaluation of two Delta 114 cleaning machines of Oromia Seed Enterprise at Hasasa and Dodola site and recommend the optimum working conditions. Under different feeding mass and three types of seed all cleaning efficiency and loss, seed recovery, machine capacity and overall machine capacity were determined. The Average cleaning efficiency 96.89, 92.99 and 80.99 in percent and Cleaning loss 3.22, 7.56 and 24.76 in percent for Hasasa and Dodola center seed cleaner gave 95.5, 95.65 and 80.99 cleaning efficiency and 4.8, 4.57 and 23.54 cleaning loss during our evaluation on wheat, barley and bean cleaning respectively. The overall efficiency of Hasasa seed cleaner was 89.75, 77.89 and 73.27 and Dodola seed cleaner was gave 81.03, 80.35 and 49.86 overall efficiency on wheat, barley and bean respectively. The average seed recovery of machine for Hasasa was 92.6, 83.7 and 91.43 in percent and Dodola center seed cleaner gave 84.83, 84.03 and 61.44 seed recovery on wheat, barley and bean respectively. From evaluation carried out, we have seen that both seed cleaners give maximum performance during cereal cleaning and they have highest performance during wheat cleaning among cereals. However, both machines showed highest seed lost during bean cleaning and hence Oromia Seed Enterprise seed machines recommended for wheat and barley cleaning, and they need to further explore the possible adjustments and repair and maintenance issues for bean cleaning.
