Abstract

House is one of the basic necessities of human life. To meet this demand for housing, people living in cities, especially, are obliged to struggle due to the gap between housing demand and housing supply, resulting in various socio-economic, political and environmental challenges. This type of descriptive investigation was carried out by identifying the damage caused by the residential settlements in Akaki-Kality sub-city in general, especially in the sub-city. 365 respondents participated in the investigation to achieve the research objective in 5 district of the city. The necessary data were collected through household random sampling techniques such as survey, field observation and interviews to get key information for primary data and extensive document survey was done to collect secondary data. Both qualitative and quantitative approaches were used by HHs using simple statistical tools such as MS-Excel, tables, text, images and photos for data analysis. The results of this study confirm that, despite the SQUID's role in solving the temporary housing shortage, the expansion of settlements on the outskirts of the district has caused various socio-economic and environmental hardships to the occupants and proves that it is legal. According to the results of the study, illegal land occupation and construction related to the increase in population is creating a serious problem in urban land management. It has been confirmed that illegal land invasion has had a significant impact on the land development administration of the sub-city. Therefore, based on the results of the study, it is recommended that strategies and policies in terms of preventing illegal land invasion and illegal construction, such as regularization, Demolition, increasing the supply of regular and low-cost housing, and taking action to follow up and controlling contribute to reducing the spread of squatter settlement of urban expansion and .For the improvement of urban land administration and registration.
