Abstract

Shock absorbers are used to dampen the vibrations of the vehicle to maintain ride comfort. The energy associated with vibration of the vehicle dissipates in the form of heat from the shock absorbers. Tapping this energy which otherwise going as a waste helps in maintaining the fuel consumption and associated exhaust emissions. In this project it is aimed to design and construct a simple mechanisms consisting of rack and pinion which convert oscillatory motion of the suspension into unidirectional rotary motion, by connecting which to the generator, electricity can be produced .The energy can be used for charging the battery. All the components like rack, pinion, bevel gears, shaft etc. with proportionate dimension to fit in the shock absorber of a Sino truck HOWO6X4 336HP Dump Truck Zz3257n3847A,are designed and a 3D model was prepared using the CATIA. A prototype was prepared by assembling the components, which were manufactured. The functionality of regenerative shock absorber was successfully demonstrated.
