Abstract
The Key Obstacles In Construction For All Parties Involved, Including Owners, Governmental Organizations, Home Builders, And The General Public, Are The Building Industry Cost, Time, And Quality. Even While The Industry Continues To Use Labor-Intensive, Complicated Construction Processes, The Periodic Swings In Material Costs Present A Significant Obstacle. Delay In Construction Has Been One Common Feature Of The Construction Industry. As A Result, Alternative Building Supplies And Techniques Are Required. An Alternative Building Material Is Expanded Polystyrene (Eps), Which Is Made From The Distillation Of Crude Oil And Is 100 Percent Recyclable. Utilizing Expanded Polystyrene Material Slows Down The Rate At Which The Environment Is Mined For Natural Resources Like Wood And Stone, Encouraging Sustainable Development. Construction Of Eps Structures Is Quick, Economical, And They Have Thermal Properties That Make Them Suited For Locations With Harsh Weather. The Aim Of This Thesis Is To Assess The Use Of An Expanded Polystyrene (Eps) As A Building Construction Material In Addis Ababa. It Analyzes The Benefits And Challenges Of Using The Technology And Study How An Expanded Polystyrene Panel Is Extracted From The Raw Material. It Compares Cost Of Wall And Slab Of Expanded Polystyrene Technology And Conventional Method Of Construction. In Order To Achieve The Listed Objectives, Data Were Collected Using Interview, Questionnaire And Focus Group. Five Different Construction Projects Were Selected Through Purposive Sampling And A Total Of 60 Questionnaire Distributed And Managed To Collect 83.3%. Data Were Analyzed Using Excel And Spss Software As Well As Descriptions Added From Data Gathered From Interviews And Focus Group. It Is Found That The Reduction In Time Or Speed Of Construction Is The Main Advantage Of The Technology. This Technology Faces The Disapproval By The Market As Main Challenge Since The Awareness Among The Different Firms Are Low. It Is Found That The Cost Of Slab Is Higher In Case Of Conventional Method But Hcb Walls Are Found To Be Less In Cost Than The Expanded Polystyrene Panels. A Sample Of House With 100 2 Slab And 107.03? Of Wall Taken To Compare The Cost And Using Expanded Polystyrene Technology Reduce Total Cost Of Slab And Wall By 34.4 %. The Completion Time Was Also Reduced By 46%.
