Abstract
The Gore-Masha-Tepi Road, which is the subject of this paper, is located in the
southwestern part of the country It starts from town and generally runs north-south for a
length of 141 km to reach the other end of the project, Tepi town. positioned in the
southwest highlands where landslides are common.
the
This study evaluated the characteristics, failure mechanism, and extent of the landslides
in
active landslide zones along the Gore-Masha-Tepi Road Geological,
geomorphological, hydrological, and human aspects were all included in the methodical
analysis a susceptibility map was created to pinpoint high-risk areas using field surveys,
Geographic Information Systems (GIS), and data from remote sensing. Following their
division into sub-characteristics using Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP), the following
important factors are taken into consideration and weighted: Lithology, Elevation,
Rainfall, Slope, Slope aspect, land use/cover, Drainage patterns (distance to stream,
distance to road), and curvature. The landslide susceptibility map is then created by
overlaying the layers of causative factors using the weighted overlay technique in the
ArcGIS environment.
The study further details the systematic assessment and formulation of remedial solutions
for one critical landslide-affected cut slopes (Km 45+350–45+440,80+610-81+600 and
82+610-83+400). Following comprehensive geological analysis and geotechnical
characterization of unstable slope materials through field and laboratory testing,
numerical modeling via 2D PLAXIS finite element software was conducted to evaluate
slope behavior. Using the knowledge gained from these evaluations, specific mitigation
plans that balanced long-term stability and technical feasibility were suggested for every
site.
The measures seek to improve road safety, reduce the risk of landslides. A crucial
framework for designing robust road developments in landslide-prone locations is
provided by this analysis to decision-makers.
