Abstract

Active Frontage Is Important For Cultivating Secure And Vibrant Urban Environments, Primarily By Enhancing Natural Surveillance The Principle Of "Eyes On The Street" That Actively Deters Crime And Instills A Pervasive Sense Of Security. This Comprehensive Study Was Designed To Investigate The Existing Frontage Levels Within Adama And Elucidate Their Spatial Correlation With Various Crime Incidents. The Core Objectives Included Analysing Adama Town's Current Active Frontage Conditions, Identifying Precise Spatial Relationships With Different Crime Incidences, And Subsequently Proposing Actionable, Context Specific Design Remedies. The Research Employed A Mixed-Methods Approach, Utilizing A Deductive Framework. Quantitative Data On Active Frontage Levels Was Meticulously Collected Through Extensive Field Observations Across Adama's Diverse Street Types. This Data, Alongside Photographic Evidence From Walk-Along Surveys, Was Digitized And Attributed Using Arcgis Software, Enabling Detailed Analysis, Interpretation, And The Systematic Mapping And Rating Of Active Frontage Levels From A To E Based On Established Guidelines. This Spatial Analysis Was Complemented By Qualitative Insights Gathered Through Interviews And Crime Statistics Obtained From Local Police, Providing A Holistic Understanding Of The Crime Landscape. Key Findings Indicate A Concerning Prevalence Of Dead Frontages Across Adama, Which, Are Significantly Exposed To Crime. The Study Reveals That A High Proportion Of Adama's Street Segments Exhibit Low Levels Of Active Frontage, Contributing To Areas Of Reduced Visibility And Social Interaction That Inadvertently Create Opportunities For Criminal Activity. In Response To These Critical Findings, The Research Proposes Innovative Design Solutions Which Mitigate Inactive Frontage Levels. These Include Enhancing New Fence Designs That Increase Visibility From Inside To Outside, Thereby Promoting Natural Surveillance. Furthermore, The Study Recommends Strategic Street-Side Landscape Designs Incorporating Various Activities To Revitalize Blind And Dead Frontages, Transforming Them Into More Engaging, Secure, And Aesthetically Pleasing Public Spaces. This Research Not Only Fills A Significant Gap In Localized Urban Planning Knowledge For Adama But Also Contributes Valuable Empirical Evidence To The Broader Discourse On Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design In Developing Urban Contexts.
