Challenges of Open Space Design and Development The Case of Adama Town

Abstract

The World?�?S Cities Are Becoming Increasingly Congested And Polluted. Urban Open Space Provides A Wide Range Of Ecosystem Services That Could Help Combat Many Urban Ills And Improve Life For City Dwellers Especially Their Health. Cities Are Comprised Of More Than Just Buildings And People. The Most ?�?Livable?�? Cities ?�? And Some Of The World?�?S Most Famous Cities ?�? Are Known For Their Open Spaces.? Due To The Ongoing Urbanization Trend Worldwide, The Distance Between City Inhabitants And Nature Is Increasing. Urban Greenery Is One Of The Ways To Bridge This Gap Between People And Nature. OUPI In Adama Town, Proposed To Increase Open Spaces In Their Successive Plans. However, The Implementation Of These Plans Has Been Far From Satisfactory And Probably Leading To Encroachment Rather Than Conservation. But, Also The Existing Open Space Condition In The Town Is Beyond The Need Of The Ever Increasing Population Of The Town. This Situation Leads To Many Questions That Will Form The Basis For The Research Problem. This Study Was Conducted With The Aim Of Assessing Open Space Problems Of The Adama Town Which Comprises Five Parts Which Is Introduction Part, Literature Review, Methodology, Result And Discussion And Conclusion And Recommendation.? The Study Found Out That, There Is? A High Degree Scarcity Of Well Designed And Developed Green Open Space And Parks Which Fit The Requirement Of Ever Increasing Population Of The Town With The Absence Of A Land Use (Re)Mixing Strategy, Weak Development Controls? And Absence Of Quality Infrastructure In Existing Open Spaces. In Addition To This Socioeconomic And Political Challenges, Fail To Implement Successive Structural Plan Of The Town And Pressure Of Urbanization Are The Main Factors For The Failure Of Open Space Development And Design In Adama Town. Therefore, In Order To Serve The Ever Increasing Population Of The Town, The Town Administration Should Continue Using Urban Planning And Urban Design As A Tool And Explore Several Strategies For Adding New Public Greenery, Play Fields, New Parks, Designing And Developing Existing Parks, Improving Accessibility To Open Spaces, Etc By Considering Factors That Affect The Effectiveness Of Open Space During Open Space Development And Design.
