Using Khat Among Adama Secondary School Grade Ten Students

Abstract

The leaves of the plant khat (Catha edulis) are commonly used in certain countries of East Africa and the Arabian Peninsula. Using khat has a deep-rooted religious and socio-cultural tradition and has a peculiarity of certain influences on the physical, physiological and psychosocial wellbeing of those involved in the habit of using it. This study focuses on assessing the causes and effects of using khat among Adama Secondary School Students in Adama city. This survey study was conducted on 1397 students who were in grade ten at Adama secondary school in 2015. The subjects were students, principal, vice principals, guidance and counseling officer as well as teachers which were selected by using snow ball, simple randomly, availability, purposively, and conveniently sampling from each groups of the school. To meet this objective, primary and secondary data were employed.
