Evaluating Urban Solid Waste Management Practice: A Case Of Adama City, Ethiopia

Abstract

Improper Solid Waste Disposal Is A Major Problem In Most Developing Country??S Urban Areas. Many Studies Show That Improper Solid Waste Management Causes Hazardous Health, Social, Environmental And Economic Impacts On Human Beings. By Using And Applying Different Techniques And Methods, The Study Analyzes Solid Waste Management Problems Of Adama City. The Study Used A Pragmatism Research Method. While Secondary Data Was Gathered From Various Quantitative And Qualitative Materials, Primary Data Were Gathered Through Field Observation And Interviews That Were Complemented By Self-Administered Questionnaires. Data From Primary And Secondary Sources Were Used And Analyzed With Statistical Tools. This Study Investigates The Status Of Solid Waste Generation And The Composition Of Some Selected Neighborhoods/ Woredas In Adama City, Ethiopia. Based OnThe Study Findings Solid Waste Generation In The City Is Highly Affected By The Average Income, Education, Family Size, House Ownership, And Reuse/Recycling, And Composting Levels Of Waste Sources. While Disposal Of Solid Waste Is Affected By Education Level, Average Income, The Level Of Awareness Of Individuals, Accessibility To Training, Municipal Supervision, And Participation Of Individuals In The Cleanup Campaign. Due To Absence Of Effective Close Supervision And Monitoring Of The Sanitation Coordination Team/Experts Especially The Mses The Local Communities Of The City Complain About The Service They Are Getting From The Municipality. Most Of Society Is Not Satisfied With The Existing Municipal Solid Waste Management System. Consequently, Some Of The Residents Are Obliged To Choose Illegal Dumping As Their Main Sw Disposal System. The Study Conclude That Despite The Fact That The Implementation Of Swm Practices In The City Could Hardly Be In Better Shape And Swm In The City Has Various Environmental, Social, Legal And Economic Problems. On The Basis Of The Aforementioned Findings, It Was Recommended That Suitable Solutions For Solid Waste Management Should Be Developed That Meet Both The General Public's Expectations And Scientific Alternatives That Are Supported By Additional Research Findings.
