Abstract

Concrete is the most preferred building material in the world and its production has increased exponentially with the rapid construction of infrastructures. The generation of waste materials has also increased due to rapid urbanization. Eggshell and wastepaper is one such solid waste material which is being generated in huge quantity due to it being a cheap source in the Environment. Cement, the vital ingredient of concrete has been reported to contribute approximately 5% of total global Carbon Dioxide (CO2) gas emissions. Therefore, the current study aimed to investigate incorporation the combined use of ESP and WPA as supplementary cementitious material along with its effect on workability, compressive strength, split tensile strength and microstructure of concrete with its environmental and economic implications. The control mix was made from a mixture of cement, water, fine and coarse aggregate to attain 25 MPa according to ACI standard, whereas the other trail mix was made with a blend of 6% 8% 10% and, 12% ESP and 4% 6% 8% and, 10% WPA by the weight of cement. Maximum compressive strength was obtained at 6%WPA and 8%ESP replacement which improved the compressive strength by 1.93%, while the improvement in tensile strength was noted to be 15% at 28 days of curing. Therefor a blend of 6%WPA and 8%ESP is taken as the better replacement ratio which had shown a better hardened property as compared to the control mix. The SEM shows compacted dense and less cracked with high C-H and C-S-H amount in the same blend motioned above. As conclusion, a blend of 6%WPA and 8%ESP replacement that is of cement can enhance the strength of concrete while reducing the environmental impact, i.e., carbon dioxide emission and energy consumption by 10.2% and 12.5% as compared to the control sample. In addition, the cost performance of the above blend decreased the of cost of control Sample by 10.35 % at 14% replacement of cement by eggshell powder and wastepaper ash.
